Mission of the Probate Court
The mission of the Lake County Probate Court is to serve the public. It accomplishes this mission by providing a fair and efficient system of justice, committed to excellence, fostering public trust, understanding and confidence. The Probate Court Judges and Staff are dedicated public servants who efficiently process all matters relating to the settlement of decedents estate, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and commitment of persons with a mental illness. Resolving disputes among interested persons will be accomplished efficiently with appropriate consideration of the best interests of the minor, the protected individual, the estate, and the public and all others who come before it.
The Lake County Probate Court is a court of statutory jurisdiction, primarily concerned with the administration of the property of a deceased person; the administration of personal and financial affairs for any individual suffering from extreme mental and/or physical disabilities; and the supervision of the financial affairs of someone under eighteen years of age.

Lake County Probate Court Judges
The Court is staffed by an experienced and knowledgeable judge that understands and excels in probate law.
- The Honorable Joseph V. Salvi is a Circuit Judge assigned to the Probate Division. Judge Salvi was appointed as an Associate Judge in 2015 and was recently appointed as Circuit Judge by the Supreme Court in 2018. Judge Salvi is a graduate from Knox College and the Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Lake County Hours and Operations
The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Lake County Probate Court is closed during most major holidays.
Security Requirements
An important consideration before entering the court are the security requirements. You will be subject to building security before you enter the court and must pass through a metal detector. Weapons are never permitted in the courthouse. The list of prohibited items seems obvious and include weapons, explosives, cutting instruments of any kind including knives, scissors or anything with a sharp or cutting edge, and chemical or aerosol sprays.
Cell phones are permitted so long as they are turned off before entering the courtroom.
