Fun Facts about Ingham County

The county was named for Samuel D. Ingham, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under President Andrew Jackson.  It is the home of the state capital, Lansing chosen because of its central location in Michigan. As of the 2010 United States Census, there were 280,895 residing in Ingham County.


The Ingham County Probate Court provides only statutorily mandated services. The major activities include filing and safekeeping of wills, probating of estates of deceased persons, trust administration, appointment and supervision of guardians and conservators for minors, adults, and developmentally disabled persons and processing mental health matters

The court is located in the Veterans Memorial Courthouse at 313 W. Kalamazoo in Lansing, Michigan.

Ingham County Probate Court Judges

The Court is staffed by two experienced and knowledgeable judges that understand and excel in probate law.

  • The Honorable Richard J. Garcia is the Chief Judge of Probate. Judge Garcia was appointed to the probate court in 2000 and is a graduate of University of Notre Dame and University of Michigan.
  • The Honorable Shauna Dunnings is the Chief Probate Judge Pro Tempore. Judge Dunnings was recently appointed to the probate court in 2018. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Howard University School of Law.

Ingham County Hours and Operations

The Ingham County Probate Court’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. They are closed from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm for lunch. The Ingham County Probate Court is closed during most major holidays.

Security Requirements

An important consideration before entering are the security requirements. You will be subject to building security before you enter the court and must pass through a metal detector. Weapons are never permitted inside the courthouse. Cellphones and other electronic devices must be placed in silent mode and turned off inside of courtrooms. Cameras are never permitted; the only exception being wedding ceremonies.

A probate record or file search can be done online if you have the file name. If you do a probate search by mail, the court charges $2.00 for the file.
