Berrien County Probate Court Judges

Hon. Mabel Johnson Mayfield

  • Judge Mayfield was appointed to the Berrien County Probate Bench by Governor John Engler in January of 2000 and has been subsequently elected to that position. She previously served as Presiding Judge of the Family Division of the Berrien County Trial Court. Effective January 1, 2020, Judge Mayfield was appointed as the Chief Judge of the Berrien County Trial Court by the Michigan Supreme Court.

Hon. Brian S. Berger

  • Judge Berger was appointed to the Berrien County Trial Court by Governor Rick Snyder on November 13, 2015 and began serving the citizens of Berrien County as a Probate Judge on January 4, 2016. Judge Berger has since been elected to that position, and currently serves in the Family Division of the Berrien County Trial Court.

Hon. Jennifer L. Smith

  • Judge Smith was appointed to the 2nd Circuit Court by Governor Rick Snyder in September 2018 and currently serves the family division. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice summa cum laude from Wayne State University in 1993, having attended on a softball scholarship. She graduated with a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School in 1996.
